Bleacher Report – Vikings

Vikings OT DeMarcus Love suspended four games for violating PED policy

MANKATO, Minn. — Minnesota Vikings offensive tackle DeMarcus Love said he was unaware a supplement he took early last spring contained a substance that is banned by the NFL.

Nonetheless, Love lost an appeal he filed in April and on Thursday was suspended without pay for the first four games of the 2013 season due to a violation of the league’s performance enhancing drug policy.

“I don’t know exactly where it came from,” Love told reporters following Thursday’s practice. “It was in a supplement I took. I just couldn’t exactly target what it was. I’m really hurt about it and don’t want too much be sad about it and harp on it because I’ve already been through that before training camp. (I’m) just waiting for everything to be behind me and move forward.”

Although he will remain eligible to participate in preseason practices and games, Love, who was selected by the Vikings in the sixth round of the 2011 NFL draft, cannot return to the team’s active roster until Sept. 30.

“I was shocked,” Love said when asked of his initial reaction after being informed by the NFL he had failed a test. “I’ve never cheated and never will. Not intentionally. Unfortunately, it’s something I can’t change. It happened, it didn’t work out in my favor, and so I’ve got to suffer the consequences.”

Vikings coach Leslie Frazier made it clear he wasn’t happy with Love.

“I was disappointed when I got the news,” Frazier said. “We sat down, talked about it, let him know my displeasure and our entire organization’s concern about him. Hopefully, he’ll learn something from this and grow from it. Hopefully, that’ll be the case.”

Frazier said that, “there are measures in place to help guys identify whatever product they’re using to determine whether or not it’s a viable product,” adding, “there are some measures you can take prior to taking whatever it is you’re taking.”

Love sat out all of last season after suffering a major injury to his pectoral muscle. He is a considered a long shot to make the Vikings’ 53-man roster this year.

This latest news clearly doesn’t help Love’s chances of sticking with the Vikings.

“I don’t really know too much know about that,” he said, “I just know it doesn’t help my situation at all. But at the end of the day, everything is up to the coaches.”
