Bleacher Report – Vikings

Kevin Williams disagrees with Leslie Frazier’s snap count limit

MANKATO, Minn. — Minnesota Vikings coach Leslie Frazier said Monday that veteran defensive tackle Kevin Williams will likely see decreased playing time, around 35 snaps per game.

To Williams, who turns 33 this month and took a $2.5 million paycut when he restructured his contract in the offseason, that’s not ideal.

“It’s low. That’s low,” Williams said after Thursday’s walkthrough. “We’ll work that out, haven’t really talked with [Frazier] about reps yet.”

Williams played 859 snaps last season, up from 818 in 2011, but finished with a career-low 45 tackles and was caught out of position multiple times in the playoff loss at Green Bay.

Frazier said on Monday that Williams is “capable of playing 60 snaps,” but that it would be better in the long run to rotate first-round pick Sharrif Floyd while Williams rests.

Williams appeared hesitant about the idea.

“Uh, that’s the plan,” Williams said. “Hopefully I won’t share too many reps with him and he can get some reps somewhere else.”

Defensive coordinator Alan Williams said Tuesday that he doesn’t envision a gameplan where Williams and Floyd are on the field at the same time, leaving Floyd’s only option to replace Williams at the three-technique.

“I’m not going to rule anything out,” Alan Williams said.
