Bleacher Report – Vikings

Jarius Wright sees himself as far more than just a slot receiver

MANKATO, Minn. — When Minnesota Vikings fans think of receiver Jarius Wright, their minds often flash to the two deep catches he made against division rivals last season.

But Wright, who worked as the slot receiver in camp, said he’s much more than the guy who caught a 54-yard bomb against Detroit or a 65-yard pass on a double move against Green Bay.

“I can catch intermediate routes,” Wright said after Thursday’s practice. “I don’t want to brag, or boast, or anything, but I think I can do it all. I can catch short routes and run 60 yards. I can run 60 yards and catch the ball. I can do both.”

Through six days of training camp, Wright has played the slot receiver when the Vikings go three-wide. Greg Jennings and Jerome Simpson are lining up on the outside.

Coach Leslie Frazier was noncommittal when asked if Wright was the replacement for Percy Harvin in the slot, but appeared to lean in one direction.

“I wouldn’t say cemented, but [Wright] has done a good job for us in that role,” Frazier said. “He did a good job for us in that role last year. But it’s early, guys are still competing for playing time. We’ll see it play out in the next few weeks.”

Wright didn’t need to be the third wide receiver on the field last season to go deep, but he’s settled into that role during team drills so far in training camp.

Wright was inactive nine consecutive weeks before Harvin suffered an ankle injury in November. He never got the chance to play with the dynamic receiver.

“To be honest, I always wanted a chance to play with Percy,” Wright said. “And get a chance to see our speed out on the field together, so when he got traded I was a little down.”

Despite the additions of receivers Jennings and Cordarrelle Patterson, both standard outside receivers, Wright’s still not convinced his only role is to replace Harvin in the slot.

“I played a lot of outside receiver in college,” Wright said. “I just want to show people I can do it. The coaches believe I can do it, now it’s just to show everyone else I can do it.”
