Training camp Day 5 quick hits: A good and bad day for Joe Webb

Notes and observations from Day 5 of Vikings training camp

• Minnesota Vikings quarterback-turned-wide receiver Joe Webb dropped a couple of passes, but made an impressive one-handed grab from rookie quarterback James Vandenberg as he ran toward the sideline.

Quarterback Christian Ponder on Webb: “Joe has made a heck of a transition, it’s tough going from quarterback to receiver. He’s got huge hands and is running pretty good routes for a guy that started a couple months ago.”

• Vikings communications personnel held a press conference Wednesday to discuss the new NFL bag policy, which limits fans to plastic, vinyl or PVC bags that do not exceed 12″ x 6″ x 12″. The point being to make all bags see-through, even if it’s just a plastic bag.

Corporate communications director Jeff Anderson said no backpacks, purses or cinch bags will be allowed, only small clutch purses that can fit into the palm of your hand will enter the stadium.

“We’re going to encourage our fans to not bring any bags into the stadium on gameday, but we know that’s not feasible for all fans,” Anderson said. “Certainly the Boston marathon incident was taken into consideration, but this started with the NFL committee on stadium security and had unanimous support of that committee and all 32 teams.”

• Pro Bowl fullback Jerome Felton returned to practice on Wednesday after missing the first two days in pads from what coach Leslie Frazier called a personal matter.

• Receiver Jerome Simpson woke the training camp crowd up with an impressive sideline grab as he was falling out of bounds. Quarterback Christian Ponder placed it where only Simpson could grab it, away from cornerback A.J. Jefferson.

Later in team drills, Simpson ran an out route to the sidelines that tripped up rookie cornerback Xavier Rhodes, who was playing in the first-team nickel defense on Wednesday. Simpson caught the pass from Ponder.

• Rhodes fell over at one point in passing drills and was kneed in the back by a linebacker and remained on the field for a brief moment before sitting out a few plays. Afterwards, Rhodes said he was fine.

• Safety Jamarca Sanford’s hands are still a work in progress as he dropped another interception in training camp, this one from third-string quarterback McLeod Bethel-Thompson.

• Rookie defensive tackle Sharrif Floyd made a leaping play to deflect a Thompson pass at the line of scrimmage, spiking it into the backfield.

• Thompson threw back-to-back touchdown passes in one-on-one drills for wide receivers and cornerbacks, the first to Mankato product Adam Thielen (over cornerback Jacob Lacey) and the second to LaMark Brown (beating out Sanford). Quarterbacks caught some breaks on Wednesday, as cornerback Chris Cook also dropped an interception thrown his way from Ponder.
