Bleacher Report – Vikings

By: Joe Nelson |
Mankato, MN – Tuesday was the first day of training camp the Vikings allowed full-pads and full-contact. Tackling was only allowed during short-yardage and goal line situations — both of which were completely dominated by the defense.
Note: Chad Greenway did not participate during tackling drills. Greenway, who underwent minor arthroscopic surgery on his knee in June, told The FAN on Monday that his health isn’t where it needs to be. Larry Dean started in his place.
Short-Yardage Situation
The first-team defense showed off with three consecutive tackles for loss against the first team offense (minus Adrian Peterson — no tackling him in training camp). Larry Dean knocked Toby Gerhart back behind the line-of-scrimmage on the first two plays, and Erin Henderson did the same on the third play. The offense mixed in a false start penalty on John Carlson, too.
Goal Line Situation
Check out the succession of plays for the first team offense against the first team defense:
Play 1: Play-action pass, Ponder throws it away.
Play 2: Gerhart stuffed by Fred Evans and Erin Henderson.
Play 3: Fred Evans stuffs Gerhart again.
The five down linemen in the goal line situation featured (from left to right) Brian Robison, Christian Ballard, Fred Evans, Kevin Williams, and Jared Allen.
One-on-One: WR versus DB
Rookie wide receiver Cordarrelle Patterson looked great in this drill. He burned veteran cornerback Chris Cook twice. On the first occasion, a double-move on a comeback route left Cook in the dust for an easy completion from Christian Ponder. The second time around Cook was flagged for pass interference (which he loudly argued).
Stephen Burton, who impressed with three touchdowns on Monday, drew a pass interference penalty on rookie DB Xavier Rhodes. Rhodes played about 10-yards off the line-of-scrimmage the second meeting, and Burton caught a pass five yards in front of Rhodes.
7-on-7 Passing
– Ponder
: 6-for-6 with a deep ball to Jarius Wright. Would have been a sure touchdown but the pass was underthrown a bit. Wright got behind Harrison Smith and Xavier Rhodes
– Cassel: 4-for-6 with a deep ball down the middle tipped by A.J. Jefferson and picked off by Robert Blanton.
The First-Round Picks
None of the first-round picks were operating with the first team offense or defense. Defensive tackle Shariff Floyd was frequently stuck on the third team; Defensive back Xavier Rhodes was opposite of A.J. Jefferson on the second team. Wide receiver Cordarrelle Patterson worked mainly with the second team offense.
The MVP on Ponder
“He’s more mature. His confidence level is high than it was last year.”
