Vikings training camp Day 1 notes: Blanton impresses in the secondary

Notes and observations from Day 1 of Vikings training camp

• Reserve safety Robert Blanton made an impressive interception off of Christian Ponder in passing drills during Friday’s practice.

Plays like that help Blanton’s ambitions of playing alongside safety Harrison Smith in week one: “Of course I want to be on top of the depth chart,” Blanton said after practice on Friday.

• On a very windy Mankato day, Ponder’s accuracy was a little off and often checked down to tight ends and his backfield, whether by design or not.

• On an errant throw for Greg Jennings, Ponder hit starting safety Jamarca Sanford in the numbers but Sanford dropped it.

• Backup quarterback Matt Cassel threw an interception to Marcus Sherels, but otherwise had an impressive outing, connecting on deep passes with Jarius Wright and Joe Webb.

Wright’s catch was an off-balance leaping grab in between both Darius Eubanks and Jacob Lacey more than 25 yards downfield.

• A slew of players caught punts: Josh Robinson, Marcus Sherels, Cordarrelle Patterson, Greg McCoy, Joe Webb, Stephen Burton and Jerome Simpson.

Robinson: “[Kick returning] is always something I’m pressing for. It’s exciting, you get a real rush when you’re back there.”

• Robinson spent time playing base corner with Cook as rookie Xavier Rhodes is eased into the offense on the second team.

• Center John Sullivan practiced with limited reps in the first team offense to Frazier’s pleasure: “John is one of our leaders,” Frazier said. “The fact he can participate and not sit on the side and watch is good for our young players.”
